Dental emergencies we treat

  • Severe toothache, including pain that keeps you awake or does not settle with pain relief
  • Chipped, cracked or broken teeth, from biting something hard, a fall or sport
  • Knocked-out teeth, where fast treatment gives the best chance of saving the tooth
  • Lost fillings and crowns, which leave the tooth exposed and prone to further damage
  • Dental abscess and swelling, a sign of infection that needs prompt care
  • Painful wisdom teeth, including swollen gums at the back of the mouth
  • Broken dentures, so you can eat and speak comfortably again

When to go to hospital instead

Go to the emergency department at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital or call 000 if there is uncontrolled bleeding, swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, or a facial injury that may involve broken bones. For everything else on the list above, an emergency dentist is the right call.

What to do before you get here

  • Toothache: rinse with warm salty water and take over-the-counter pain relief as directed. Never put aspirin directly on the gum.
  • Knocked-out adult tooth: hold it by the crown, not the root. If it is clean, gently push it back into place. If not, keep it in milk and come straight in. The first hour matters most.
  • Chipped or cracked tooth: keep any fragments, rinse gently and avoid chewing on that side.
  • Lost filling or crown: keep the crown and bring it with you.
  • Swelling: use a cold compress on the outside of the cheek, and call us straight away.

What happens at your emergency appointment

We start by getting you out of pain. Your dentist examines the area, takes X-rays if needed and explains what is causing the problem. You get a clear treatment plan and an itemised quote before anything goes ahead. Often we can fix the problem in the same visit. If a tooth needs more work, such as root canal treatment or a crown, we stabilise it first and book the rest at a time that suits you.

Emergency dental costs

The cost depends on what your tooth needs. We will always tell you the cost before treatment starts. We claim health fund benefits on the spot, offer payment plans through Mediplan, and accept the Child Dental Benefits Schedule for eligible children. Cost should never stop you getting urgent care.
